David Boyd

David Boyd was born in Melbourne in 1924 the son of the artist Merric Boyd. In his early years Boyd was known for his work with pottery. In the 50’s he went on to develop his career as a painter with a series of paintings on Australian explorers. David Boyd worked and travelled in Europe and the UK, winning significant international recognition as a figurative painter, ceramic sculptor and potter. He returned to Australia in the 70s, becoming chairman of the Contemporary Arts Society of Australia and for the next 20 years travelled and exhibited overseas and at home to world acclaim.

Throughout his career his work has always remained distinctive, with a figurative narrative making provocative comments. They have included works based on historical and social themes such as The Explorer Series, The Law, The Church and The State. Other major series have included The Trial, the Tasmanian Aborigines, the Wanderer and the Exiles.

In contrast the Europa series depicts a certain innocence as a series of works of children dancing, wombats and the bush.

David Boyd is now residing in Sydney and remains a distinguished world class Australian artist.
