Charles Blackman

Charles Blackman was born in 1928 in Sydney, Australia. He studied at the East Sydney Technical College, between 1943 and 1946. From the late 40’s until the early 60’s Blackman lived and worked in Melbourne where he made his reputation winning several awards and exhibiting with the re-formed Contemporary Art Society.

He then traveled, studied and exhibited overseas after winning Helena Rubinstein Scholarship. This included time in London and northern France and Flanders.

After returning to Australia in the late 60’s Blackman lived and worked in Sydney.

1975 was spent at the Internationale des Arts, Paris. Blackman then spent his time in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia. He currently lives in Sydney. Over his working career as a prolific artist Blackman had numerous solo exhibitions in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, London and Tokyo.

In 1977 Blackman's reputation as a significant Australian contemporary painter was recognized with an OBE 'for services to art'. In 1993 the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, staged the first major retrospective of Blackman's work, 'Schoolgirls and Angels' which toured to Brisbane, Sydney and Perth.

His work remains in the National Gallery of Australia, all state galleries, numerous regional galleries and university collections.
